Minor Eye Condition Service (MECS)

If you have a minor eye problem, you may not need to see your GP. Patients registered with a GP in Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge, Havering or Waltham Forest can access the NHS Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS) for assessment and treatment by a qualified eye care professional.

Common conditions include:

  • Blurred vision or watery eyes
  • Dry, red or pink eye
  • Floaters or flashing lights
  • Blepharitis or conjunctivitis
  • Itchy or burning eyes
  • Allergic eye conditions
  • Mild eye pain or discomfort
  • Eyelid lumps or styes
  • Ingrowing eyelashes
  • Post-operative cataract assessment/monitoring
  • Stable glaucoma monitoring

Important: If you experience sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, chemical injury, or significant eye trauma, do not use this service. Attend your nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) department immediately or call 999.
